Ancient Theatre of Syracuse, Italy

The Festival del Teatro Greco di Siracusa once again offers unique performances in the magnificent setting of the Ancient Greek Theatre of Syracuse. As part of its 61st season of classical productions, the Fondazione INDA presents The Persians by Aeschylus, directed by Alex Ollé (La Fura dels Baus) and translated by Walter Lapini.

The oldest surviving play in world literature takes audiences to Susa, where the royal court of the Persian Empire anxiously awaits news of Xerxes' campaign against Greece. Atossa's prophetic dream foretells disaster, until a messenger arrives to announce the crushing defeat of the Persian fleet at Salamis. Through mourning, hubris, and the memory of the fallen, Aeschylus celebrates the power of tragic poetry while reminding us of the human cost of war.

Taking the stage at the Ancient Theatre of Syracuse:

▪️ Atossa – Anna Bonaiuto
▪️ Messenger – Giuseppe Sartori
▪️ Ghost of Darius – Alessio Boni
▪️ Xerxes – Massimo Nicolini
